Now That's What I Call Stuart's Favourite Music 58 - Howard Jones (Things Can Only Get Better)

The title for today's song is very apt...  Things can only get better, because they certainly can't get any worse.

Released in February 1985 as the first single from HoJo's Dream Into Action album, it peaked at number 6 on the UK Charts.

As with most Howard Jones songs, this one reminds me of a happier, less stressful time in my life, playing on the Commodore 64 in my bedroom while Howard Jones (and Nik Kershaw, and Level 42) would be played by my sister in the room next door.

I really wish I could go back in time and relive the 1980s all over again.  Family walks from Leigh-on-Sea to Southend, family game nights, playing Go For Broke and Game of Life on the kitchen table, seeing my friends daily, and of course playing on my C64, with the only thing to worry about being having to make sure my homework was in on time.

Now That's What I Call Stuart's Favourite Music 33 - Howard Jones (Like To Get To Know You Well)

Well, it's about time I had another classic from 80's legend Howard Jones in my list of favourite songs, simply because a) it's a bloody fantastic song, and b) it will always remind me of playing on my Commodore 64 in my bedroom, while my sister would be listening to Howard Jones (amongst many others) in the room next door.

Released back in 1984, I still wonder to this day why this song never reached any higher than number 4 in the UK charts (even Agadoo by Black Lace got higher around the same time!)  Oh well, no accounting for taste.

Enjoy this gem from good ol' HoJo.  Even the video is sooooooo 1980's.  Love it!

Now That's What I Call Stuart's Favourite Music 1 - What Is Love (Howard Jones)

Note - This post was originally written in 2011 and re-edited in 2021)

A friend of mine, (Dan English) did something similar every Monday many, many years ago... Well.... Some Mondays at least (remember Musical Mondays?), so I am going to start too - I will be posting videos to songs that mean something to me....

Songs I love...  Songs I grew up with...  Songs that have got me through good times, and bad times.

Why am I doing this?

The project began back in 2011 as a way to collect my favourite childhood tunes and put them in one place to share with my family and friends on my blog.

At first, I limited my list to only include music from my childhood and later teenage years, but as I get older with each passing year, I've decided that I should also include a selection from more recent times too.  Just don't expect too many of them...  I'm a child of the 70s and 80s after all.

The other reason for doing this is because I can remind people just how great 80s music really is (compared to the chod that is in the charts today).

Anyway....... Let us begin with.......

Now That's What I Call Music 1:- Howard Jones - What Is Love

Released back in 1983 and taken from Howard's debut album, Human's Lib, it reached Number 2 in the UK Singles Charts.

I have fond memories of this song - partly because my sister was a big fan of 'HoJo' and always played his music (I could always hear it through the thin wall that separated our bedrooms - I'd be busy playing games on my Commodore 64 and she'd be blaring the likes of Howard Jones and Nik Kershaw!). I wasn't really interested in it when I was young, but as I grew up and appreciated 80s music more, this one always stands out as a classic 80s track and one of my all time favourites.
