Hammer Down - Map for the Commodore 64

I recently purchased a copy of a fantastic little game on the Commodore 64 called Hammer Down as part of a Kickstarter called "The Commodore 64 Collectors Guide to Mastertronic" which I backed.  It is in fact the first proper 'brand new' Commodore 64 game that I have purchased in 30 years.

The book of course is a brilliant read, and a must for anyone who grew up with Mastertronic games in the 1980s, but over the past week or so I've been addicted to the game Hammer Down.  The best way to describe it is a top-down version of the classic Mastertronic game Action Biker.  In fact, I believe the author of the game (the late Jason Kelk) was trying to mix the gameplay of Action Biker, with the top-down-view graphic style of The Last V8.

Anyway, the game is wonderful and I can't praise it enough, with great graphics and an awesome SID rendition of "The Return of the Las Palmas 7" by Madness playing in the background.

Anyway, through a lot of playing I managed to beat the game and locate all the items and bonuses and I have included the map here.  Hopefully, other people will find it useful, especially if they're having trouble locating an item.

Items are identified as stars, and the bonuses are indicated by numbers in blue circles.  The map loops around, and you should be able to see where one end of the maps leads to the other end.

The game can be obtained from Psytronik's website here

The book (and many others) can be purchased from Fusion Retro Book's website here.

Now That's What I Call Stuart's Favourite Music 15 - Action Biker (Rob Hubbard)

My favourite songs are not just limited to popular music which was available and eligible for the charts.

One song in particular which always conjures up fond memories from when I was little is from a classic computer game called Action Biker.

I was first introduced to this game back in late 1985.  My friend, Steve Ready had it on his Atari 800XL, and the theme song got stuck in my head ever since.

At the time, our family only had a Commodore Plus 4 and I was extremely jealous because Action Biker was not available for that machine.  A few years later I managed to get it when I was lucky enough to receive a Commodore 64 for Christmas in 1987.

Rob Hubbard wrote some of the most memorable songs on the Commodore 64, but this one will always stand out for me.

I even wrote a remix of it a few years ago, along with a short video of me playing, and finishing the game (see the video below), although the original will always be the best!

A great game, a great song, and some fantastic memories - not bad for £1.99!

Kayleigh's Retro Isolation - Day 1

My daughter enjoys playing computer games, especially those on the PS3 and PS4.  So, during the UK Covid-19 virus lockdown, I plan to introduce Kayleigh to a different retro game every day so she can experience the type of games I was playing when I was her age.

Retro Game Boys Episode 1 - Action Biker (Commodore 64)

Well, it's been a long time coming but episode 1 of Retro Game Boys is now online.

The idea of our new YouTube channel is for me to introduce Kieran to some of the games I was playing when I was his age and growing up, and to see what his opinion are of them in a world of XBoxes and PlayStations.

"Join the Retro Game Boys as they review and play games from yesterday.  In episode 1, Stuart introduces his son Kieran to the wonders of Action Biker - A classic Mastertronic game on the Commodore 64 from 1985.  Grab yourselves a pack of KP Skips and enjoy!"
