SONGS THAT REMIND ME OF MY CHILDHOOD     GAMES THAT REMIND ME OF MY CHILDHOOD
STUART'S PANORAMIC WORLD     MASTERTRONIC - WHAT IF?

The random ramblings of a Star Trek-obsessed schools ICT Systems Manager who likes a good moan.
This is a place where I can whinge about life, and express my love of my family, 80's music, retro computer gaming (especially on my Commodore 64),
oh and Star Trek. I'm very open with my opinions and I like a good moan. If you don't like what I say, then you might want to consider not reading this blog.

Songs that remind me of my childhood Number 33 - Like To Get To Know You Well (Howard Jones)

Well, its about time I had another classic from 80's legend Howard Jones simply because a) it's a bloody fantastic song, and b) it will always remind me of playing on my Commodore 64 in my bedroom, and my sister would be listening to Howard Jones (amongst many others) in the room next door.

Released back in 1984, I still wonder to this day why this song never reached any higher than number 4 in the UK charts (even Agadoo by Black Lace got higher around the same time!)  Oh well, no accounting for taste.

Enjoy this gem from good ol' HoJo.  Even the video is sooooooo 1980's.  Love it!

Another year older.

Oh well.  One more year on.  I think Sophie and Kayleigh were more excited about my birthday today than me!

Anyway, I just wanted to say a big thank you to all my friends, family and work colleagues for your birthday wishes - especially those on Facebook (as if FB didn't remind you!). It really does mean a lot.

However, what's worrying is that this morning I had to think for a moment how old I've actually become.  I think I stopped counting a few years ago.  Either that, or  I'm losing my mind.

It's been an ok day I suppose, culminating in a lovely meal with Michelle at Ask Italian in Moreton-in-Marsh.  Shame I had to spend the rest of the day at work.

Oh well, 2 more until the big 40.

Songs that remind me of my childhood Number 32 - Always On My Mind (Pet Shop Boys)

Following on from my last blog post, I'm keeping with the Pet Shop Boys because Always on my Mind stands out as not only being one of the best cover songs ever made, but possibly one of the greatest pop songs of the 1980s (perhaps all time) and a massive favourite of mine since I was a wee lad.

It's quite appropriate that I have chosen this song as my STRMOMC as today marks 27 years (yes, TWENTY SEVEN YEARS) since the song entered its consecutive fourth fantastic week at the number 1 position on the Official UK Charts, after having been the Christmas number one a few weeks previously.

Why can't modern groups produce belters like this any more, instead of the usual Crap Factor turds.

Also, you've got to love the video, featuring clips from their rather bizarre movie "It Couldn't Happen Here", and of course starring De Nomolos himself (from Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey) Joss Ackland, and even Biggles!

"Where are you going?"

"I'm going there....  But I like it here wherever it is".

Songs that remind me of my childhood Number 31 - Heart (Pet Shop Boys)

The Pet Shop Boys were a band I was never particularly in to back in their heyday, which is surprising when you consider the similarities between them and my favourite synth group Erasure.  Sure, I loved West End Girls, It's a Sin, Always On My Mind and pretty much everything else on their "Please" and "Actually" albums, but I never paid much attention to what they produced after that until only a few years ago.  Boy, was I missing out.

Anyway.....

Having said that, I always had a fondness for Heart.  Released in 1988, it entered the charts in March at number 30 before rightfully reaching the number one spot the following month where it stayed for a few weeks.  I didn't realise until only recently that Sir Ian McKellen played the vampire in the accompanying video.

Ahhhhhh...  I was just 11 years old at the time.  Life was so much easier (and less stressful) back then.

And so another one ends, and a new one begins....

Hmmmph.  Happy New Year 2015
  • A new year for more things to go wrong
  • A new year to spend stressing and worrying about everything.
  • A new year of working my arse off, but still not be able to buy a house or have anything to show for it apart from an empty bank balance, and lots of sleepness nights.
  • Another year closer to death.
  • Another year further away from the best decade ever (the 80's).
  • Another year closer to being 40.
  • Another year to wonder where I'll be this time next year.
Yes, I can think of a couple of good things - I have a wonderful family whom I love more than anything else in this world (and are the only thing keeping me going at the moment), but being the natural pessimist that I am, these things are always overshadowed by the negative things in life.... because that's me.

Also, after reading quite a few posts from my friends on Facebook, it seems as though quite a few people also had an awful 2014 and are glad to see the end of it.  SO, here's wishing you all a much better 2015.

Anyway, I doubt I'll be purchasing a hoverboard any time before Wednesday October 21st 2015, nor will I be getting a hover conversion done to Zoe Zafira.  Damn you Robert Zemeckis...  Your future predictions were crap.

Goodbye 2014 - You were quite shite actually.

Sigh....  New year is always such a depressing time of the year (Spoken in true Marvin the Paranoid Android style).  Added to that, we're leaving Laindon tomorrow to return to Evesham.  Boo hoo.
